*Narrative Practice is a collaborative approach to counselling and community work that was developed in Australia and New Zealand by Michael White and David Epston. It is a respectful, non-blaming way of working which centres people as experts in their own lives; it examines the broader social and cultural context in which problems develop and challenges many assumptions in the therapy culture.
As the word narrative suggests, counsellors/coaches who use this approach are interested in exploring with people the stories they have about their lives and their problems. Through a process of re-authoring, people can break away from stories that sustain problems and develop an alternative and preferred story that is more in keeping with their personal values, hopes and commitments.
